Psychotherapy/Eating Disorder Supportive Therapy

All of our trained and licensed therapists are specialists in treating eating disorders, however, they also treat non-eating disorder conditions including depression, mood disorders, anxiety, grief, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), adjustment disorders, ADHD, couples and family issues, performance disorders and a multitude of psychological conditions. Each therapist has a unique approach and amongst our team we have therapists that specialize in working with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults using a variety of therapies including psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, ACT, ERP, IFS (internal family systems), and couples/marital therapy. Additionally, our therapists are very pro-active in encouraging mindful training including various forms including yoga, meditation, bio/neurofeedback and other techniques often covered during sessions. As a part of the ED-180 training philosophy, most of our therapists are also educated and informed about the neuroscience of the brain and psychotherapy. Our goal is to always match you with the best therapist that fits your requirements. Therapists are available to meet in person at our offices, via telehealth, or a combination of both.

Psychiatry/Neuropsychiatry

Dr. DeSarbo is a neuropsychiatrist who has a unique neurobiological approach to treating eating disorders and mental health conditions. Eating disorders are conditions which have a significant effect on the brain and central nervous system (CNS) resulting in changes to the brain and CNS structure and physiological functioning. Dr. DeSarbo’s treatment plan includes approaches to address these neurobiological factors and at times will order MRI’s or SPECT scans to assess brain and CNS changes. In addition to traditional psychotherapy and other treatment modalities, specific biological interventions and tools may be added to the treatment to assist in recovery.

Medication Management

At ED-180, an assessment for medication and on-going management of prescribed medications for psychiatric conditions will be with Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo, a specialist in the neuropsychiatry of eating disorders and general psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, ADHD and other diagnosis. Our approach with medications is somewhat conservative, only prescribing where there is an appropriate indication. Dr. DeSarbo is known to fully explain the reason why a certain medication may be recommended as well as offering a detailed explanation of how a medication works and what are the realistic expectations for potential side-effects and benefits. Genetic testing is also offered when indicated for the medication selection process.

Also, at the ED-180 offices is Dr. Igal Rahmani who specializes in addiction medication for patients with a primary or secondary diagnosis related to addiction medicine. Dr. Rahmani is also licensed to prescribe specialized addiction medications such as Suboxone and Vivitrol.

Nutritional Counseling

Our office nutritionists are experienced registered dieticians with specialized training in treating eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, ARFID and other disordered eating patterns.

For those with an eating disorder, it is important to work with a nutritionist who is a true specialist experienced in eating disorders (EDs), not just disordered eating. An ED nutritionist has extensive specialized training beyond their nutritional degree and have acquired experience working with other ED clinicians in the specialty. They not only helpdevelop an eating plan and approach for recovery, but the nutritionist often plays a crucial role in behavioral modification and accountability for recovery, delicately navigating the language of the eating disorder that preoccupies the mind of the individual. Metabolic testing to establish Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is available to assist in weight management and treatment planning for nutritional services.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Dr. Jennifer McMonigle of McMonigle Neurology Associates is a board-certified neurologist who provides TMS treatment for depression and related conditions at theoffices at ED-180 in Garden City as well as at her main office in East Northport, N.Y.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. TMS is primarily used as a therapeutic tool in the field of psychiatry, particularly for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). It has also shown promising results in treating other mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and certain types of chronic pain. TMS is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, with few serious side effects.

Clients sit comfortably in a chair while an electromagnetic coil is gently placed against the scalp of the individual receiving the treatment. When an electric current is passed through the coil, it generates a magnetic field that can induce electrical activity in specific regions of the brain. TMS is typically administered in multiple sessions over several weeks, and the treatment duration and frequency can vary depending on the specific condition being treated. An initial consultation with Dr. McMonigle can help assess a patient’s appropriateness and answer any questions one may have regarding the procedure.

Genetic Testing for Psychotropic Medications

At ED-180 we offer sample collection and testing with The GeneSight Psychotropic report may help you avoid multiple medication trials by providing information about which medications may require dose adjustments, be less likely to work, or have an increased risk of side effects based on your genetic information. The report includes information on how a patient’s genetics can effect body’s metabolism of certain psychotropic medications.

Clients received a detailed report classifying over 60 mental health medications including medications such as antidepressants, antianxiety medications, mood stabilizers, ADHD medications, sleep medications and antipsychotics. Based on the individual’s unique genetic profile, the report indicates which medications may be used as directed and which medications may have significant gene-drug interactions that may interfere with treatment response, helping the prescriber select medications that may be more effective and have fewer side effects. The test is simple, requiring a small cheek swab, sealed and sent off to the testing center.

Metabolic Testing

At ED-180 we offer metabolic testing using a device called a  metabolic analyzer that provides an accurate, professional metabolic rate measurement. Measuring a person’s metabolic rate allows you to construct a meal/activity plan based on individual caloric needs and allows us to monitor and follow treatment progress as metabolism can change over time.  In a simple procedure where the client rest comfortably in a quiet office and breaths through a mouthpiece for about 8-10 minutes, the metabolic unit directly measures the concentration of oxygen a person breathes out. All the exhaled air is collected and analyzed calculating a direct correlation between oxygen consumed and calories burned. This procedure is nearly 99% accurate in measure an individual’s resting metabolic rate (RMR) allowing our treatment team members to assess one’s physiologic capacities with caloric expenditure and making more detailed recommendations for nutritional and activity level treatment to reach desired goals.
